Hedychium coccineum 'Tara'
Available in various sizes. (Bare root rhyzomes in spring and potted from May)
This is one of the most robust and hardy of the Hedychium ginger species. Native to India, Nepalese Himalaya and Bangladesh. It has a large underground rhizome and thick pseudostems that produce large glaucous green leaves and a big flaming flower spike in orange with hints of red. Flowering is in late June to August. This is a must have for anyone looking for an exotic look in the garden.
Grow in sun to part shade in well drained soil with added organic matter. Feed well throughout the growing season. Mulch well with bark chip or similar.
