Zingiber mioga ‘White Feather’

This is a is a hardy member of the ginger family, and like most in the genus it grows from a rhizome. The upright stems reach about 1-1.2 meters and are covered in lance-shaped leaves edged with white markings, giving this plant an exotic appearance- great for a tropical planting scheme. Orchid-like, white, creamy/yellow flowers appear at the base of the plant from large, dark-pink buds in late summer. Found in the cool mountains of south east China, Vietnam and Korea when it has evolved to cope with extreme cold, often down to -16 C, making it ideal for gardens here in the UK. It is best planted in a sheltered, part shaded position in rich, moist, fertile soil which is well-drained during winter. A protective layer of mulch can be added to protect the crown during winter, once the foliage has died back.
