Tetrapanax papyrifera 'Rex'
Supplied in a 9cm pot

Known affectionately by it’s fans as ’T.rex’ and for good reason. This wonderful plant is like a Fatsia japonica on steroids and undoubtedly one of the most architectural, hardy, exotic plants possible to grow here in the U.K. With perhaps the largest leaves of any other woody plant grown here "Rex' certainly makes it's presence felt in the garden.
Tetrapanax papyrifera ‘Rex' grows fast, with up to 3 foot of growth each year and it sends up suckers like bamboo. Each palmate leaf can grow to 90-100 cm across so avoid planting in a very windy position.
Planting out should ideally be done in early spring in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. Soil conditions should preferably be moist but well drained, ideally not waterlogged during winter. Feed from early spring with a seaweed extract based fertiliser and ensure the ground doesn’t completely dry out in summer.
Evergreen in Southern coastal gardens and southern urban warm microclimates, but this jungle monster is hardy throughout most of the UK were it is usually deciduous. If you live in a particularly cold area it's a good idea to protect the trunk in winter with straw or fleece.
If the main stem is damaged by very hard frost, do not despair, T. rex will come back from root suckers and will very quickly recover it’s full glory.
Tidy up in Autumn, removing old leaves and cutting back weak or very leggy growth.

Full Sun
Moist but well drained soil
RHS hardiness rating H4

Plants are supplied in a 9cm pot, with their compost and are similar to the plants seen in pictures 4,5 and 6. Picture 1,2 and 3 shows a planted specimen and is not the plant for sale.
