Canna altensteinii
Seeds supplied in various seed counts.

Canna altensteinii is a bold, tropical-looking perennial grown from rhizomes, prized for its enormous paddle-shaped leaves and tall, dramatic flower spikes. Reaching 2.5 meters tall with a 1 meter spread, its lush deep-green foliage forms an architectural clump topped in summer by large orange-red blooms that attract pollinators. Thriving in full sun and rich, consistently moist soil, it performs well in borders, containers, and near water features; lift and store rhizomes in colder regions or mulch heavily in milder areas. Low-maintenance and statement-making, Canna altensteinii adds instant tropical flair to any landscape.

Seeds need pre treatment before sowing. Scarify the seeds, by filing a small nick on each seed coat and then soak for up to 48 hours in water. Keep the water tepid but not hot.
Wash and then sow in well drained seed compost in small pots or trays (we sow individually in 7cm pots). Cover seeds with compost to depth go 1cm and then place in a propagator at 20 to 25℃. Germination can take anything from 1 week to 2 months.
Once the shoot appears remove the seedling from the propagator and place in a warm, well lit place, but not in direct sunlight. Pot on as required. We normally get seedlings to a 3 litre pot in the first year.
Over winter first year plants in a cool, frost free place (Green house is ideal). Then plant out the following year.
