Boophone disticha
Supplied in a 9cm pot

These are year 3 plants grown from seed on our nursery.

Boophone is a genus of 2 species many many forms from Africa in the Amaryllidaceae family. The plant consists of a conspicuous fan of wavy-edged grey-green leaves and a large scaly bulb above ground. Flowering in spring with heady scented pink flowers held above the bulb. The flowers quickly fade after pollination, and the pedicels elongate to form a large decorative seed head with fleshy seeds in the three-sided seed capsules. When the seeds are mature, the infrutescence is dry and stiff, breaking off from the stout bulb and rolling away in the wind or down the slopes, shedding seeds along the way.

For pot culture, it is advisable to use a deep bulb type of pot, as the Boophone have a large and deep fleshy root system. The potting mix should be well drained and contain 25% pumice or similar. Bulbs should be fed well during the growing season and then allowed to dry off as the plant goes dormant in late autumn. Repot into increasingly larger pots every couple of years. The final pot size being around 7.5 to 10 litres. when repotting try to keep at least 50% of the bulb above ground. Winter protection in a dry unheated greenhouse is advisable.

The bulb is poisonous and should be handled with care. Wash hands well after repotting/ pruning.
