Echinocereus coccineus
Syn: Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. coccineus
‘Mexican Claret Cup’
Commonly known as the ‘Mexican Claret Cup’ this is a fantastic small to medium, clump forming cactus. It reliably flowers in early summer with loads of scarlet red cup shaped flowers. With its native environment being south western USA at 1500 to 2800 meters, it is one of the ‘Hardier’ cactus species. Requires an extremely well drained low nutrient compost and benefits from extra calcium in its soil mix. Water and fertilise from late April to September when dry. Hardy to -5c if dry in winter (Maybe lower!). Happy in a shallow terracotta pot or try in a sheltered, sunny, dry bed if you are lucky enough to live in an urban micro climate or frost free south west costal position. Grows to around 8cm tall and spreads up to 30/40cm (as a clump of stems). A very easy to grow but exceptionally rewarding cactus, one of our favourites.
Position: Full Sun
Soil: Well drained soil
RHS hardiness rating: H3/H4
