Jungle plant collection 4 x Big leaved exotic plants
Supplied In 9cm pots
Collection includes one of each of the following:

1 x Fatsia japonica ‘Spiders Web’

Supplied in a 9cm pot

This is a wonderful foliage shrub with delicate white makings on the edges of the leaves. The markings almost look like the plant has been dusted with icing sugar. The flowers, like the standard Fatsia japonica, are very attractive to bees and other pollinators, so looks great and good for wild life. Grow in part shade in a well drained but moist soil, can also be grown in large pots or tubs. Protect from frost in its first couple of years with horticultural fleece. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.

Part shade /dappled light
Well drained soil
RHS hardiness rating H4

1 x Gunnera manicata
The Giant Rhubarb plant.
Supplied in a 9cm pot

This is a monster, jungle plant that can produce leaves that create the look of prehistoric jungle. At best the plant will put up leaves that are 2 meters across and on stems of 1.8 meters. They need a rich, constantly moist,  almost boggy ground to do this. If planted in more modest conditions this water loving plant will grow proportionately smaller.
The pictures of the specimen plants were taken at Trebah gardens in Cornwall and show what is possible.
Protect in winter by simply cutting back the leaves and turning them upside down over the growing points of the rhizome.

Full Sun
Moist soil/boggy conditions
RHS hardiness rating H4/H5

1 x Musella lasiocarpa
Common name: Golden lotus banana or Chinese yellow banana
Supplied in a 9cm pot

This high altitude dwarf Banana from the Yunnan Province was thought to be extinct until very recently. It is probably the hardiest of all Musa in cultivation and can be grown in the UK with winter protection.
M. Lasiocarpa forms a clump of plants over time and can reach 1.5 meters high with a spread of nearly a meter. Leaves are paddle shaped bright glaucous green and more upright than some of the other banana species grown here in the Uk.  Once mature a long lasting flower is produced. Flowers look like a lotus flower and are bright yellow. Each stem dies back once it has flowered, but fear not, as loads of small suckers will be produced to replace the main stem.
Winter protection is needed to keep this hardy exotic in the ground over winter. We treat ours much like our M.basjoo. A cylinder of mesh is placed around the plant and packed with straw. A fleece is then wrapped around this with a plastic ‘hat’ placed on the top.
Detailed instructions are available on request. Also why not try our Banana fertiliser, available on ebay.

RHS hardiness rating H2/3

1 xColocasia ‘Black Coral'
Supplied in a 9cm pot

This large tropical species is traditionally used as a vegetable in Asian continents due to its edible corm, but is more often used in Europe as a stunning foliage plant. This variety has huge, jet black, heart shaped leaves that will undoubtably improve a shaded area on the patio, or around a water feature.

Grows to around 150cm tall and requires a constantly moist soil throughout the growing season.  Best growth in a sheltered spot in dappled shade, but best leaf colour is produced in full sun and plenty of water. Store tubers overwinter in a dry, frost free place. Bagging with just moist vermiculite over winter helps prevent the tubers/corms from drying out too much.
